Your post mentions ibmtso18 anf ibmiso18.

In any event, based on data sets, there does not appear to be an ibmtso18 or ibmiso18 userid. The process that creates userids allocates a couple of userid.xxx data sets, and the first logon of a userid creates more userid.xxx- data sets, and there are no ibmtso18.xxx or ibmiso18.xxx data sets.

If you try to obtain a userid, I would recommend you do not use ibmxxx userids. It appears the local administrators do not allow ibmxxx userids to complete the logon.

One last word: you cannot specify or define 8 character TSO userids.

It appears the registration did not go through. I do not know why. You will have to try again.

As for the 7 character restriction, I have no idea as to the reason. TSO control blocks from the first TSO release imposed the 7 character restriction in such a way that providing an 8 character ID would be quite difficult. It is also related to the internal format of the original TSO userid control data set, which no one uses any more, as far as I know, though it is still supported. This data set is a PDS. Each user has a member with the member name containing the userid; the 8th character is reserved for extensions for users with large definitions. LXX1972 would be members LXX19720 ... LXX19729. One nice idea in the methodology is a user can have multiple passwords; each userid/password combination defines a unique setup, which isn't possible with every security system I've encountered. Not that anyone actually used this feature, but ...

  • Registering for the forum ^= registering for a z/OS TSO userid. To apply for a TSO userid, you have to use this page.
  • TSO userids starting with 'IBM', 'TSO', 'RACF' can (still) be registered, but cannot be used.
