WSCON

Postby maltz99 » Mon 16 Sep 2013, 20:50

Hi from Mel (maltz99)

I last did a successful data xfer in July 2013.

Since then my broadband has been upgraded and xfer doesn't work any more.

My WSA setup is fandezhi/99.255.186.181

In WSCON I enter the TCP/IP address I get from ipconfig (without the :nnnnn suffix).
I have noted that it's different from the TCP/IP address presented when I first connect.

I get the big yellow error after a minute "TCP/IP CONNECT RC=48"

Hope you can help.

When your broadband was "upgraded," did you get a new router? One of the steps you must do to use WSA is to tell your router to "port forward" some IP "port" (I don't remember the port number) to your workstation. If you get a new router you must repeat this step.

Thanks for your help, I should have mentioned that the upgrade also involved changing the cable modem from a USB to an Ethernet port.

I've been through all the config options for the Network Connection and can't see anything like "port forward".

I have a port number of 15993 which I added to my ipconfig tcp/ip address on wscon and also added it to WSA (I didn't have one before).

Still get the same error, I'm on Win/XP it that helps.

Are you telling us your work station is connected directly to the cable modem? No router? If that's true, I don't have a clue.

Since my last post, I've found out a little more.

Yes, it's a router, Virgin Media call it a SuperHub.

Contacting them about port-forwarding led me to a rule based screen to set this up.
Trouble is I have to know what "Services" I need from a drop-down list of around 20...stuff like BGP(TCP:179) and FINGER(TCP:79) none of which mean anything to me.

Appreciate your help.

I'm guessing here, but BGP and FINGER are names for commonly used things - what I don't know. What is important is the number. Somewhere in this menu should be a place to insert a custom number.

"Super hub." Sometimes I think networking folks have gone overboard with terminology. A "hub" is "standard" terminology, but I've never quite figured out the difference between a "hub" and a "switch."

Most home routers combine the router with a 4 port switch. Even wifi enabled routers usually retain the switch.

I don't have to select a "Service", but then I have to enter a start port and end port.
What numbers would you suggest ?

see my links http://home.mebtel.net/~rsilvers/zOS_IS ... _winxp.htm *NOTE: IPCONFIG only works if you are in the same domain as the mainframe host or if you have direct access to the Internet. If you are accessing thru the Internet with a router/modem WAN/LAN setup then you need to do port forwarding http://home.mebtel.net/~rsilvers/zOS_IS ... orward.htm

1. go to http://www.ipchicken.com/ and find your actual IP address on the internet
2. You should have an option for Custom Defined Service, and you should be able to name anything you want as I named mine pc computer type, i.e 883N
3. Protocol= TCP WAN Start=15993, WAN End=15993, Lan Port=15993 and Lan IP address=your computer IP address
4. Once you have your Port Forwarding setup, start WSA and click Options, click Set TCP/IP port and type in the port number from step 3.
5. When you use WSCON from Fandezhi the TCP/IP Address will be (actual IP address on the internet:15993), need the colon followed by 15993 (the port you forwarded in Step 3)

You can also forward to multiple computers on your LAN using different port numbers. I have 4 computers and have port forwarding for 15993, 15994, 15995, 15996...just remember when you use WSCON to change the correct port number to forward to correct computer

My advice would be avoid using IP for Dezhi systems since our service doesn't bind to a fixed IP address. The IP is not 99.255.186.181

Thanks,

See Virgin Media Super Hub step by step instructions http://help.virginmedia.com/system/self ... TYPE=Cable

3b. In the Predefined Rule section, select a service from the Service drop-down menu.

3c. Optionally, you can also create a custom rule that is not in the list of predefined services by specifying the following settings in the Add Rule section:

Name: enter a name for the service.
Start Port: enter the start port for the service.
End Port: enter the end port for the service.
Protocol: Select the protocol for the ports:
– TCP: selects TCP only.
– UDP: selects UDP only.
– TCP&UDP: selects both TCP and UDP.
IP Address: enter the local IP address for the computer that is using the service.

Yes you can do that, but you will get an Incoming connection pop up window every time you connect and sometimes it hangs the connection.
To prevent this do the following:

1. From Windows CMD prompt, type command: PING FANDEZHI.EFGLOBE.COM and note the IP address
2. Add an entry in the WSA System Register for Fandezhi
3. Under Systems, click ADD and type in system name (can be anything) and IP address from Step 1, click OK button to save.
3. Select Radio Button Auto Connect List
4. Under User IDs, click ADD and type in your Fandezhi userid, click OK button to save.
5. Click OK button to exit WSA System Register.
6. Close WSA and restart
7. Logon to Fandezhi TSO/ISPF and type WSCON....type in your TCP/IP Address with port 15993 example ...11.111.11.111:15993 and you will auto connect
to your desktop consistently and smoothly

Could you write down what you did, just in case someone else encounters the same problem at a later stage?

To summarise...

I upgraded my broadband connection from a Virgin Media USB Cable modem
to an Ethernet SuperHub Router.

I don't do PC/fandezhi transfers very often, but they ceased to work
with error "TCP/IP CONNECT RC=48".

The info you need...
IP Address (ipconfig)
Default Gateway (ipconfig)
External IP (www.ipchicken.com)
FanDeZhi IP (ping fandezhi.efglobe.com)

1) Update WSA if needed to the FanDeZhi IP address (it changed for me)
2) Add a "Port Forward" to the SuperHub
a) Internet Explorer...type the Default Gateway into the address
like 123.234.345.456
You should get the Virgin Media SuperHub screen
b) Name and Password are pasted on the router
c) Click Advanced Settings (bottom right)
d) Click Security...Port Forwarding (page down a bit)
e) Service : ignore this
Name : fandezhi (or anything else)
Start Port: 15993
End Port : 15993
Protocol : TCP
IP Address: The last number of the ipconfig IP Address
f) Click Add Rule...you are now done here

3) Start WSA
Logon to FanDeZhi
WSCON, should connect you
=3.7.2
The IP address you need is the External IP with :15993 added

4) If it stops working for no obvious reason, recheck all of the IP
addresses...they do change
